Three-dimensional structure and stability of discontinuities between unmagnetized pair plasma and magnetized electron-proton plasma

Abstract We study with a 3D particle-in-cell simulation discontinuities between an electron–positron pair plasma and magnetized electrons protons. A is injected at one boundary speed 0.6 c along its normal. It expands into electron-proton magnetic field that points orthogonally to the injection direction. Diamagnetic currents expel from within pile it up in front of it. pushes electrons, which induces electric pulse ahead one. This initial electromagnetic (EMP) confines magnetically accelerates protons electrically. The fast flow across behind EMP triggers filamentation instability. Some positrons cross build second EMP. Electron-cyclotron drift instabilities perturb both EMPs seeding Rayleigh–Taylor (RT)-type Despite equally strong perturbations EMPs, much more stable than attribute rapid collapse instability, perturbed RT-type instability transforms planar transition layers, flux ropes electrostatic forces due uneven numbers slow down compress accelerate In our simulation, expansion cloud decreased by about order magnitude density increased same factor. Its small thickness implies capable separating relativistic outflow plasma, essential for collimating jets collisionless astrophysical plasma.
